Chesterfield Health District’s Health Educator Ginell Ampey and Public Health Nurse Supervisor Suzie Trotter applied for and received a $1,000 grant from the Alliance of the American Dental Association (AADA) to provide oral health education to seniors. With the support of the district's dentist, Dr. Gordon Witcher, and Registered Dental Hygienist JoAnn Wells, they prepared a one-hour dental care presentation. The group conducted trainings at some of the county’s assisted living facilities, adult day care facilities and local churches. The presentations focused on achieving and maintaining proper oral care, preventing health problems due to oral disease, and denture care. Participants also received either dental health care kits that included a toothbrush and floss or kits prepared for those with dentures. So far, 128 seniors have taken advantage of the sessions.
