Health Equity Specialist - Position Description

The positions requires knowledge and skills in the area of public health policy issues related to health equity, minority health; rural and urban health; program planning and development; implementation and evaluation; marketing/communication techniques for disseminating information; managing grant reporting financial/progress reports; VDH programs and services. The position requires the ability to be a self-starter, plan organize and prioritize multiple projects. The position facilitates meetings and serves as Office representative on some VDH agency wide initiatives. Also, drafts and disburses meeting summaries, compiles reports related to evaluating various health programs and initiatives.

The position requires:
Knowledge:
Health equity framework and the social determinants of health Healthy People 2020 framework Federal and state laws, regulatory processes, policy development

Skills: Public health program development and evaluation Creative and business writing, grant report writing, grant records management; Group process and meeting facilitation; Developing and leading training activities; Public speaking; Community and organizational assessments; Effective written and oral communication, Developing public health policies and regulations Computer software skills with Microsoft Office Suite.

Abilities: Develop/provide training on various health equity topics; Conduct follow up evaluations of studies/reports/projects; Conduct research to identify evidence base, best practices and strategies to promote health equity; Manage concurrent projects; Set and meet realistic objectives and completion dates; Work with culturally and ethnically diverse groups and communities; manage concurrent projects; Establish effective working relationships with public and private entities.

Education: Degree in public health, communication, health care policy, planning, administration or equivalent training/work experience. Prefer advanced degree.
