A Call for Proposals

The Virginia Area Health Education CEnter (AHEC) Program, as part of the Virginia Health Workforce Development Authority (VHWDA), is calling for proposals to open a new AHEC Center in the South Central region of the Commonwealth. The South Central region includes the counties of Amherst, Appomattox, Bedford, Campbell, Franklin, Henry, Patrick and Pittsylvania and the cities of Bedford, Danville, Lynchburg and Martinsville.

The Virginia AHEC Program is a partially federally-funded initiative that aims to: (1)educate and train students to become culturally competent primary care health professionals who will provide healthcare in underserved areas and to health disparity populations; (2) increase the number and variety of primary care health professionals who provide care to underserved populations in Health Professionals Shortage Areas (HPSAs) and other medically underserved areas; and (3) recruit into health careers individuals from underrepresented minority populations or from disadvantaged or rural backgrounds.

The applicant selected to host a Virginia AHEC Center in South Center Virginia will join other regional AHEC Centers in developing new and enhancing existing health workforce development programs and share the opportunity to become a part of Virginia's statewide health workforce development network formed through the VHWDA. For more information, please call (804)562-4928 or email Gay S. Plungas at gplungas@vhwda.org. The deadline has been extended to 5PM on October 2, 2013.
