The mission of the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) is to address the root causes of poverty in the United States through the support of community-controlled, self-help organizations and through transformative education. CCHD's Community Development Grants support organizations that bring poor and vulnerable people together to change structures and policies that perpetuate the cycle of poverty. Priority is given to organizations that work with persons directly experiencing economic or social injustice, such as racial discrimination, long-term joblessness, or economic dislocation. Grants range from $25,000 to $75,000. The Pre-application Eligibility Quiz may be submitted between September 1 and November 1, 2011. (Organizations are strongly encouraged to submit their quiz prior to the November 1 deadline.) Online applications for new applicants are due December 31, 2011. Visit the CCHD website for more information about the Community Development Grants program.

New grant opportunity for health equity work

I wanted to call your attention to an exciting new community grant opportunity from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) that focuses on addressing social and economic factors that affect health and contribute to health disparities. The Foundation plans to award about 14 grants of up to $200,000 each to established coalitions of community stakeholders for work to enhance education, income and jobs, community safety, or social and family supports. The work must focus on changing policies or systems in counties, regions or states. It must be framed around the County Health Rankings, which provide data on how each county in the nation fares on key health statistics. The initial deadline for grant applications is April 27, when a brief proposal is due. There is a requirement for a local match of the funds. You can find more information about the Mobilizing Action Toward Community Health (MATCH) grant on the RWJF website.

Edgewood Community Gets a Garden Makeover

Fiskars, The Home Depot and Southeastern Horticultural Society partner to transform a barren lot into a blossoming garden.

“The Edgewood Community Garden is the fifth in a series of national gardening projects for Fiskars. We hope that this further celebrates the importance of gardening in providing beauty, sustainable food resources and a place of community,” said Paul Tonnesen, President of Fiskars.

Who will benefit from this new garden?
  • Over 300 neighborhood members will have a gathering place, food and flowers.
  • 3 large schools will utilize the location for their curriculum. Several worships locations will provide support.
  • 2 Senior Centers will have access, so residents can remain active in their gardening hobbies.
  • Local Master Gardeners and Horticulture society members will provide routine learning and hands-on experiences throughout the season.
The Edgewood Community Garden Makeover initiative is an extension of Fiskars’ successful Project Orange Thumb Grant program. Through grants, Fiskars provides community garden groups with the tools and materials needed to reach their goals for neighborhood beautification and horticulture education. Project Orange Thumb successfully completed a garden makeover in Toronto, Ontario, in the Scarborough Neighborhood this year, and they have another planned for the Baltimore area later this summer.

Department of Health Awarded a Healthy People 2020 Evaluation Grant

The Office of Minority Health and Public Health Policy is pleased to announce that the Virginia Department of Health was awarded a Healthy People 2020 Evaluation Grant in the amount of $37,000. This project will position the Commonwealth of Virginia as a best practice site in using Healthy People 2020 (HP2020) goals and objectives to inform and guide statewide health and public policy decisions in order to promote public health, health care and health equity. The Grant will provide the means to improve the health in the Commonwealth of Virginia by building the public health knowledge base and improving the awareness of the HP2020 framework among key decision makers.

HP 2020 is a science-based, 10-year set of national objectives developed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for promoting health and preventing disease. The Secretary’s Advisory Committee of National Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Objectives for 2020 proposed a set of four overarching goals for HP 2020:
  • Achieve health equity, eliminate disparities, and improve health for all groups
  • Eliminate preventable disease, disability, injury and premature death
  • Create social and physical environments that promote good health for all
  • Promote healthy development and healthy behaviors across every state of life
The project will entail development and implementation of an education program for senior administration officials and key legislators – led by Virginia’s Commissioner of Health, Dr. Karen Remley and supported by Governor Tim Kaine and Secretary of Health and Human Resources Marilyn Tavenner – concerning key health outcomes, how they are determined, and how they can be impacted – directly or indirectly- by a wide range public policy decisions. Our goal is that legislative leaders and executive branch agency leaders will understand the relevance of the HP2020 framework and goals to their work, even if they do not consider their normal responsibilities to include health issues, and that they will utilize the HP2020 framework and goals to guide their work.

An anticipated outcome of this project is that each of Virginia’s state agencies will integrate HP2020 objectives into their strategic plans and performance measures. This will lead Virginia to incorporate HP2020 goals and objectives into the state’s performance leadership and accountability system, Virginia Performs, which will enable Virginia to quantify its success in promoting health and eliminating health inequalities.
