2013 Grief Reach Request for Proposals

About Grief Reach

Grief Reach is a partnership between the National Alliance for Grieving Children and the New York Life Foundation. The goal of this partnership is to provide funds to Children's Bereavement Programs to expand the reach of their programs to include underserved youth populations (18 years and younger). The funds for these grants are generously provided by New York Life Foundation and the oversight and RFP process is managed by the National Alliance for Grieving Children. Final decisions on grants are made by a review committee consisting of representatives from both the National Alliance for Grieving Children and the New York Life Foundation.


Amount and Range of Grants

This year the Grief Reach project will again provide $750,000 in grants with the following number of grants and grant amounts:


  • 5 - $10,000
  • 5 - $15,000
  • 5 - $25,000
  • 5 - $100,000 ($50,000 a year for two years)

State and Regional Approaches to Improving Access to Services for Children and Youths with Epilepsy

State and Regional Approaches to Improving Access to Services for Children and Youths with Epilepsy grants will award funding to support state and local governments in their efforts to improve access to health and other services for children and youths with epilepsy (CYE) residing in rural and/or medically underserved areas.


Projects will be conducted on a statewide or regional basis and must deliver all of the following components:

•Patient/family-centered care evidenced by partnerships between professionals and CYE and their families
•Access to a culturally competent patient/family-centered medical home which coordinates comprehensive care

•Access to adequate health insurance and financing of services

•Early and continuous screening for epilepsy and associated co-morbid conditions

•Community services organized for easy use

•Successful transition to adult system of care  
  • Geographic coverage Nationwide
  • Amount of funding Total Funding Available: $2,733,548
  • Award Ceiling: $390,536 per year
  • Number of Awards: 7

Community Access to Child Health (CATCH) Resident Funds Program

The Community Access to Child Health (CATCH) Resident Funds Program supports pediatric residents in the planning and/or implementation of innovative, community-based initiatives that increase children’s access to medical homes or specific health services not otherwise available.


These projects should lead to programs that can be replicated in other communities. Resident CATCH projects must include planning activities or demonstrate completed planning activities, and may include implementation activities.

Priority will be given to projects serving communities with the greatest demonstrated health care access needs and health disparities. Strong collaborative community partnerships and future sustainability of the project are encouraged.

Grants are available for programs that offer:

•Community-based initiatives that increase children's access to medical homes or health services not otherwise available and connecting uninsured/underinsured populations with available programs
•Connecting uninsured/underinsured populations with available programs
•Secondhand smoke exposure reduction
•Initiatives to address community barriers to immunizations
•Native American child health
