Chief Deputy Announcement

It is our distinct pleasure to announce that Marissa J. Levine, MD, MPH has been selected for the position of Chief Deputy Commissioner for Public Health at the Virginia Department of Health effective immediately. Dr. Levine brings tremendous skills and knowledge as a board-certified family physician with significant clinical practice and public health experience. She completed her Bachelor of Arts Degree cum laude in Biology from the University of Rochester, her Doctor of Medicine Degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, her family medicine training at the University of Virginia Family Medicine Residency Program and her Masters Degree in Public Health from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.


Dr. Levine has worked in VDH since 2002, starting as a District Health Director then advancing to Deputy Commissioner for Public Health & Preparedness in 2009 and assuming the additional role as Acting Chief Deputy Commissioner for Public Health in 2012. She has demonstrated her steady, calm, collaborative, insightful and effective leadership as she has convened, coached, encouraged and led successful teams. We are fortunate to have such a talented, driven and passionate public health champion, continually seeking ways to improve processes and outcomes for those with whom she serves and for those we all serve. I am confident that her solid leadership efforts will continue to benefit VDH and the Commonwealth of Virginia.

MINORITY HEALTH and
HEALTH EQUITY

The Virginia Depart of Health is seeking a Director for the Office of Minority Health and Health Equity.  This position serves as senior policy and medical advisor to the State Health Commissioner regarding the agency's minority health efforts and public health policy. Provides expert medical and programmatic direction to initiatives for special populations including minority, rural and the underserved. Assesses and defines public health problems/issues. Ensures polices, programs and services are designed to result in optimal outcomes and regulatory compliance.  


Must be licensed to practice medicine in Virginia. Extensive knowledge of minority and special population health issues, public health principles and practices, health equity, research and program evaluation, health workforce and education, strategic planning, policy development and legislative analysis. 


Experience supervising staff, project management, team development, budgeting, grants management, formulating public health policy and using various software applications. 


Ability to analyze and define large scale complex problems; mobilize resources; identify diverse solutions; organize and direct a combination of agency functions; interpret scientific research; communicate effectively and maintain effective work relationships.   



MPH and board certification in preventive medicine or related specialty.
